Nike just did something bold. After nearly four decades of riding on the back of one of the most iconic slogans in history — Just Do It — they pivoted. They didn’t abandon it; they reframed it. Their new voice? Why Do It.
Now, you might be thinking, “That’s Nike. Billion-dollar brand. Different world.” But here’s the thing — it’s not a different world. It’s the same one your patients live in. It’s the same consumer mindset your practice has to connect with.
Nike didn’t change just for fun. They changed because the world has changed. Today’s decision-makers are anxious, skeptical, comparison-driven, and searching for meaning in every commitment. They don’t want to “just do it” anymore — they want to know why. Why this brand? Why this product? Why this experience?
That’s not so different from your new patient consultations, is it?
Think about it. The family sitting in your TC room has endless options. They’ve read reviews, scrolled Instagram, Googled competitors. By the time they’re across from you, they’re not wondering what orthodontic treatment is — they’re deciding why you.
And here’s where I bring the Nike parallel back to you: if your practice is still relying on the same old scripts, the same presentation style, the same assumptions about what today’s patient cares about… you’re already behind. Even if your numbers haven’t caught up to show it yet.
I’ve been inside practices all over the country — small startups, powerhouse multi-locations, and everything in between. I’ve seen seasoned teams who are “good” but leaving money on the table because they don’t know how to evolve. I’ve seen dysfunction masked as “our way of doing things.” And I’ve seen great teams become even greater by aligning their strategy with today’s consumer reality.
How You Can Use This in Your Practice
As a practice growth advocate, I focus on coaching TCs and practices to show up with clarity, authority, authenticity — and my study of the orthodontic industry partners with high-end hospitality, sales, marketing, and customer service to ensure my clients are proactive and strategically modernizing.
Here are some ways you might use Nike’s “Why Do It?” as a prompt to up your own game:
- Audit Your Messaging: Emails, social media, website. Ask: are we talking about “what we do” or “why we do it”? Are we speaking to what matters to the patient, especially their fears, hopes, values?
- Consultation Script Refresh: Embed the “why” early. Why does this treatment plan make sense for this patient, not just in general. Why now. Why your practice. Why this option vs alternatives. Ask great questions so your consultation is a high-impact conversation that meets each consumer in their moment, otherwise what you’re doing isn’t much different than a bad first date.
- Team Training: Have your team (especially TCs) understand the values behind your messaging. You want consistency: how the Doctor says things needs to be woven into every phone call, face-to-face conversation, clinical handoff, and new patient exam.
- Be Brave with Your Stories: Show not just your wins but your process. Show patients facing fears (“I was nervous about braces” and “I thought it would harder to get used to my aligners”). Show the before/middle/step-by-step of a total patient journey. This makes you more relatable, and that’s what today’s consumer is looking for.
- Stay Relevant: Watch culture. What makes people uncomfortable? How can you address those head-on?
That’s the work I do with RiseUP Coaching. I don’t come in with cookie-cutter templates. I come in as an outsider who has studied growth strategy, consumer behavior, and high-end customer service. I help your practice evaluate every detail — how you show up, where you show up, and why it matters. The result? Same-day case acceptance soars, conversion rises, and profitability follows.
My private clients routinely 5x–10x their investment in the first year.
The Data and the How
Let’s get practical.
- Industry averages are stagnant: Most orthodontic practices convert only 58–62% of exams into starts. My RiseUP clients routinely hit 75–90%+.
- Same-day starts are the differentiator: Practices that commit to 50%+ same-day conversion see higher production, less follow-up fatigue, and reduced marketing spend per lead.
- The cost of passivity is steep: With an average case value of $6,000, every 10 lost starts is $60,000 in missed revenue. Multiply that over a year, and you’re looking at hundreds of thousands left on the table.
- Consumer behavior is shifting fast: Patients expect convenience, transparency, and guidance. If you don’t meet them where they are, someone else will.
Where to start modernizing right now:
- Evaluate your consultation flow — does it lead with clarity, authority, and authenticity?
- Empower your TC — they aren’t schedulers, note takers, or messengers. They’re sales leaders, influencers, and emotional and practical guides toward same-day decision-making.
- Audit your patient experience — every touchpoint is a moment of impact. Is it on purpose?
- Stop assuming “good enough” is enough — the practices winning today are the ones strategically modernizing.
