What we believe about ourselves shapes how we live in this world, how we allow others to treat us, and what we prioritize. The way we talk to ourselves matters more than any other voice or influence in our lives.
I write 10 things that I’m grateful for EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! I have a dedicated gratitude journal, and almost always find it very easy to list positive things that are presently happening. I’ve done this for 9 consecutive months, and my life is noticeably happier because of the way this habit has improved my mindset, attitude, and way of being! Life will always twist and turn, but it’s how we face the highs and lows that matters most. On my hard days it can be a struggle to find 10 things I’m thankful for, and I find myself saying things like “I’m thankful for my pretty hair” or “I’m thankful that every day is a new beginning”. . . but most of the time I easily fill an entire page with heart-felt gratitude. I look forward to this daily exercise, and believe that living with gratitude is crucial to having a foundation of peace, love, kindness, and happiness.
A few months ago I started adding “I am statement’s” to my daily writing, which include “I am a badass”, I am created to shine”, “I am hopeful”, “I am blessed”, “I am powerful”, “I am unstoppable”, “I am worthy of happiness, balance and joy”, and “I am loved” (to list a few), and recently I started writing “affirmations” about my life and goals to better envision who I am and where I’m headed. I’m especially happy to focus on the greatness I see in myself and show purposeful kindness to myself, because sadly my inner-voice has had seasons and years of being really critical and damaging. These exercises are proving to be as useful as therapy! The way we talk to ourselves matters more than any other voice or influence in our lives. I created this practice to think positively when I was struggling, and as I’ve continued and expanded on this practice I’ve discovered immense growth and happiness, a deeper connection with myself, an appreciation for what I have and who I am, and I love my life more than ever before!
Recently I wrote this affirmation:
I live a happy, healthy and blessed life. I’m athletic, confident, loving, productive, strong, and understanding. I trust myself and embrace change, knowing that my biggest goals and dreams require drive, passion, faith, and action. It is okay to be uncomfortable on the journey toward achieving my dreams, and I know that I’m worthy of living an inspired, wonderful, and adventurous life. I believe in myself and my efforts, and I give myself permission to honor my body, mind, and spirit with rest and simple enjoyments, without guilt or judgement if I don’t accomplish all my daily chores, because I know that pursuing my passions requires a healthy heart and enjoyable lifestyle, not just hard work.
I invite you to start a gratitude journal so you can experience for yourself the blessing of focusing on positivity every day. Life is a crazy beautiful journey of adventures, brokenness, highs and lows, and I believe that attitude and perspective have a powerful influence over how we view and experience ourselves and our life.
